What’s Happening

August, 2025

Still working on the Reverse Dictionary – getting there bit by bit! It’s a lot of work!(There is currently over 8000 pages! Lots more to come!)
Lots more words have been added also.
So keep checking back!

March, 2025

Note: It is taking a long time to get the Reverse Dictionary pages set up, to format them, list the words by parts of speech, and to add new ones.
I was listing the words in some pages by date, but that takes a lot more time, so they will all eventually be alphabetical.
As mentioned, I am still adding new words as I go. And, of course Word of the Day.
So everyday there is something new on the site!

Enjoy!

January, 2025

I’ve not written an update for a while, so here it is!
I’ve had a few inquiries/requests about the updating/formatting of both the dictionary and the reverse dictionary.
Other than the Word of the Day, I’ve not done a lot of updating on either of them in the last while.
I have some health issues, which have seen me in and out of the hospital, and I’ve not felt much like doing any of it.
So, after a lot of thinking, which, thankfully, the old brain is still capable of, I have decided to concentrate on the reverse dictionary for now.
That has always been my goal – to have a reverse dictionary that includes obsolete/old words, less common words, English and American dialect words, and slang.

Note that when you click on a key word, e.g.’ happy’, the words are listed by part of speech, then by publication date. Depending on the source I used when I entered the word, that date is possibly way out of range, especially if it’s from a reference book. In such cases, I have added (Bk.) at the end of the word entry. I hope to get those words closer to their original publication date as I come across them in my sources.
(Also note: I have come across words that are duplicated under the same heading with different dates – sorry for that. I hope to get that cleaned up also. If you do see one, you can let me know, but I will get to it at some point!)

I appreciate any feedback, and enjoy hearing from other word lovers, but please remember I am not a word expert, just simply a person who loves words.

Enjoy!

In the Reverse Dictionary…
…there’s currently 800+ words for a prostitute.
https://lexicophilia.com/reverse-dictionary-prostitute/

….1200+ words for a foolish person.
https://lexicophilia.com/reverse-dictionary-fool-nouns-person/

… 400+ words for to speak

Every word that was at WORDS AND PHRASES FROM THE PAST has been moved to LEXICOPHILIA. Many more have been added since. And lots more to come.

Every single page is being re-formatted. That’s a lot of work!
It will be done bit by bit as I add new content.
So please excuse how ‘messy’ it looks as I work my way through it all!

Thanks for stopping by!
Have a great day!

    1. Glad they were useful! 🙂

I think those words fit most pollies.
Along with a multitude of not-so-nice adjectives!

The following is one of my favourite political quotes: –

“Politicians are like diapers. They both should be changed often–and for the same reason.”

(it is often wrongly attributed to Mark Twain. Seems to have first appeared in a Los Angeles newspaper in 1992 → https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1992-05-25-me-120-story.html)
